Elemental magnesium is the number that turns a marketing label into something comparable. Without it, 500 mg citrate, 1,000 mg oxide and 2,000 mg glycinate are simply weights of different compounds. They do not contain the same amount of magnesium.

This distinction is not a technical loophole. It is basic chemistry, and it explains why a jar can honestly say both 2,100 mg magnesium glycinate and 300 mg magnesium per serving.

What does elemental magnesium mean?

A mineral compound combines magnesium with another molecule. In glycinate, magnesium is bound to glycine; in citrate, it is associated with citric acid; in oxide, it is combined with oxygen. Elemental magnesium counts only the magnesium portion.

The NIH fact sheet explicitly notes that the supplement label declares elemental magnesium rather than the weight of the whole magnesium-containing compound. That makes the nutrition panel more useful than a large front-label number.

How to calculate the elemental percentage

Elemental percentage = elemental magnesium ÷ compound weight × 100

Example: 300 mg ÷ 2,100 mg × 100 = 14.3%.

PubChem lists magnesium glycinate with a molecular mass that implies a theoretical anhydrous magnesium fraction of about 14.1%. Commercial ingredients can differ through hydration, buffering and formulation, so the calculation is a reasonableness check rather than a laboratory authentication test.

If a product claims a much higher elemental percentage while presenting itself as pure bisglycinate, read the ingredients closely. It may include magnesium oxide or another buffer. A buffered product is not necessarily useless, but it should not be compared as though every milligram came from the same chelate.

Per capsule versus per serving

A label may state 100 mg elemental magnesium per capsule while the recommended serving is three capsules. Another may state 300 mg per serving in one powder scoop. Both supply 300 mg if used as directed, but the burden and cost differ.

Always record four fields: elemental magnesium, compound amount, units per serving and servings per container. This prevents capsule count from masquerading as value and prevents a compound headline from masquerading as elemental dose.

Does elemental magnesium make every form equal?

No. Elemental dose tells you how much magnesium is present; the compound can influence solubility, tolerability and laxative effect. Organic salts such as citrate generally show better bioavailability than oxide in comparative studies, while glycinate is often selected for tolerability. Direct head-to-head evidence between every modern formulation is limited.

Use elemental magnesium to standardise the quantity, then use the form to judge practical fit. Neither number should erase the other.

  2. Identify every magnesium form in the ingredients.
  3. Find the total compound weight where it is declared.
